SA Reichswettkampf (SA sport championships attended by Viktor Lutze and Rudolf Hess) in Berlin
The rare oversized heavily illustrated diplomatic activity and news magazine Illustrirte Zeitung (also written Jllustrirte in German) was published weekly by Verlag J. J. Weber in Leipzig for a very long time before the National Socialists were elected to power in Germany. “Germany’s oldest illustrated weekly magazine” prided itself on providing “the best coverage of Germany’s economy and culture” and contained lots of general news pictures and diplomatic and foreign policy news. It was the semi-official record of what went on in the Diplomatic Service and at the highest echelon of German government. The excellent editorial content was always supplemented with big, sharp photographs as well as illustrations and art in color and black & white, and all printed on high-quality white paper.

This is a 10-3/4 x 14-5/8 inch, 1 inch thick hardbound book containing all weekly issues published between 6 July 1939 and 28 September 1939, with approximately 395 heavily illustrated pages. These thirteen issues of Illustrirte Zeitung were bound with without their covers. However, the front cover illustration by Rudolf Lipius of the 27 July issue (commemorating World War I) was used on the front hardcover of this bound book.

The 31 August 1939 issue of Illustrirte Zeitung has coverage of the Non-Aggression Pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. It has photos of Adolf Hitler, Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, Joseph Stalin, Hermann Göring and other important dignitaries. It also has news about the fate of the 80,000 Volksdeutschen or ethnic Germans in Poland, the strategic importance of the Weichsel River (now called the Vistula), Wehrmacht preparations (below) and rare pictures of Hitler Youth and SS troops, Gauleiter Forster and Dr. Frank in Danzig.

The content is remarkable! Looking through the book is like having a front row seat during the lead-up and the start of World War II with chapters titled “There will never be another Treaty of Versailles” and “Hitler liberates the German East”.

The September issues of Illustrirte Zeitung contain lots of news updates about the fate of ethnic Germans in Poland (shown left), the return of Danzig to the Reich, photos of the Wehrmacht invasion of Poland, Adolf Hitler visiting the front lines and wounded soldiers, military equipment and troops, strategic advances shown on maps, etc.

The 27 July 1939 Illustrirte Zeitung commemorates the 25th anniversary of World War I. The historic timeline is accompanied by beautiful period illustrations (many in color) of Hindenburg, the trenches, soldiers in battle, airplanes, naval ships and artillery.

Issue 4928 of Illustrirte Zeitung is all about the city of Nürnberg and the Nazi Party Days. It has stunning photos of colossal new structures (finished and under construction) at the Reichsparteitaggelände (visited by Albert Speer and Adolf Hitler), tourism in Nuremberg, art by Albrecht Dürer (some in color), the new city zoo, etc. Special advertising by companies located in Nuremberg include Schuco and Trix toys, TeKaDe, Lebkuchen, Triumph typewriters, and many beer brewers and beer halls. Subsequent magazines don’t have photo coverage of the huge event as it was canceled due the outbreak of the war.

While we can not be absolutely certain that every page in every historical 1939 Illustrirte Zeitung magazine is there, we did not notice any missing, or any pictures cut out or significant damage to the nearly 5 pound hardcover book while making the photos for this web page.

Very nice used condition, no odor.
